Microbial consortia display intricate functional properties across various environments, such as soils, bioreactors, and human hosts. These properties, ranging from driving biogeochemical cycles to combating pathogens in the gut, are crucial in shaping the biosphere. Understanding how physiology and ecology collaborate within these complex consortia to determine emergent functions poses a central challenge in microbial ecology. This talk presents two studies efforts aimed at addressing this problem.
In the first study, we utilize closed microbial ecosystems (CES) as model biospheres to investigate how communities organize to drive emergent nutrient cycles. A novel technique is developed to quantify carbon cycling in hermetically sealed microbial communities. Our findings demonstrate that CES, composed of an alga and diverse bacterial consortia, autonomously establish robust carbon cycling over extended periods. Interestingly, comparing replicates of diverse CES reveals that carbon cycling is not heavily reliant on the specific bacterial taxonomy present. Despite significant taxonomic differences, self-organized CES consistently exhibit a shared set of metabolic capabilities. Thus, the emergent carbon cycle imposes metabolic, but not taxonomic, constraints on ecosystem organization.
In the second study, we introduce the concept of community-function landscapes, analogous to fitness landscapes, which capture how alterations in community composition affect collective function. Leveraging datasets representing diverse community functions, we demonstrate that statistically-inferred landscapes accurately predict community functions based on the presence or absence of specific strains. Crucially, community-function landscapes enable prediction without explicit knowledge of abundance dynamics or species interactions. The success of our approach arises from the observation that empirical community-function landscapes tend to not be rugged. This breakthrough facilitates the rational design of consortia without requiring detailed knowledge of abundance dynamics or species interactions.
