英语写作中“前”“后”preceding、previous 、following、subsequent 的用法

一、英语论文写作中“前一章节”、“后一章节”的表达为the preceding section/chapter、the following section/chapter，例如：

In the preceding section/chapter, we gave the definition of secure multi-party computation.（在前一节/章中，我们给出了安全多方计算的定义。）

In the following section, we will conduct performance evaluation.（下一节我们将进行性能评价。）

二、注意，preceding的意思是刚刚之前，所以能够表达“前一章节”，而一般“前面的”、“上面的”用above或previous 、prior，例如：

From the above/previous/prior analysis, we can see that exhaustive search is not a feasible alternative.（从上面（前面）的分析，我们可以看出穷尽搜索不是可行的选择。）

三、“后面的”、“下面的”用subsequent 、following表达，例如：

This issue remains unresolved and will be investigated in subsequent work.（这个问题还没解决，将在后续工作中研究。）

We will turn to other aspects of this issue in subsequent chapters/sections.（后面的章节我们将转向问题的其他方面。）

The following explanation would make the declaration clearer.（下面的解释会使声明更清楚。）

四、还有in the following（在下面）、above（在上面）的表达，例如：

The protocol is described above, and it will be evaluated in the following.（协议已经在上面描述，将在下面评价。）

还有一个表达in the sequel，与in the following 同义，可以替代in the following，不再举例。

In the following ……还有一个间接替代表达proceed to do，上面例子可以是：

The protocol is described above, and now we proceed to evaluate it.

注意precede(preceding)和proceed 这两个难记又易混淆的单词这里都出现了，可以帮助掌握。

五、副词previously 、subsequently 也是常用的表达，例如：

Researchers presented various schemes for alleviating this problem subsequently.（研究者们后来提出了多个方案来解决（缓解）这个问题。）

It can be said that FFT reaches the limit of fast algorithms for DFT. No researchers studied fast DFT anymore subsequently.（可以说FFT达到快速DFT的极限，后来再没人研究快速DFT了。）
