英语写作中“足够的”Adequate sufficient的用法

Sufficient adequate同义，略有不同的是adequate 隐含与需求匹配（注意词根equa），而sufficient 语气轻松，隐含“很多很多”，所以在研究论文写作中一般似用adequate 更合适。例如：

The proposed scheme provides adequate privacy protection for users.（用户会关心他们的隐私，提出的方案为用户提供足够的隐私保护。）

The bandwidth Internet provides for any user is always adequate.（Internet 提供给任何用户的带宽总是足够的。）

The detector receives adequate information to identify the object.（探测器接收足够的信息发现目标。）

The lab. possesses adequate equipments like computers.（实验室拥有足够的像计算机这样的装备。）

在上面的例子中用sufficient 也不是完全不行，但语气太轻松，有点不符合严谨的科研态度。

下面的例子用sufficient 是合适的：

Due to sufficient bandwidth, we don’t need to consider communication cost.（由于足够的带宽资源，我们不必考虑通信成本。）

Sufficient 可以接不定式，（adequate 不行，）例如：

Atomic Power is sufficient to destroy the world.（原子能足以毁灭世界。）

凡是用sufficient 和adequate 的地方都可用enough 替代，口语中合适，写作中enough 多了不是很典雅。

sufficient 有一个同根词suffice（动词），口语中不用（语气太正式），写作中可用，例如：

A threshold enough high suffices to prevent false warnings.（一个足够高的门限可以防止错误预警。）

The intractable mathematical problem suffices to ensure that our scheme is secure against attacks from adversaries and semi-honest servers.（数学难解问题足以保证我们的方案是安全的，可以抗敌手和半诚实服务器攻击。）
