① Has it ever happened to you? ② Have you ever put your trousers in the washing machine and then remembered there was a large bank note in your back pocket? ③ When you rescued your trousers, did you find the note was whiter than white? ④ People who live in Britain needn’t despair when they made mistakes like this (and a lot of people do)! ⑤ Fortunately for them, the Bank of England has a team called Mutilated Ladies which deals with claims from people who fed their money to a machine or to their dog. ⑥ Dogs, it seems, love to chew up money!

  • despair 是不及物动词，后接名词要加介词of，despair of sth。 They’d almost despaired of ever having children. 他们对生孩子几乎不抱任何希望了。
• do 在这里代指前文出现过的动作，即：despair when they made mistakes like this
  第六句里面包含了两个从句，分别是which引导的定语从句，先行词是 a team called Mutilated Ladies，以及 在这个定语从句中又有一个 who 引导的状语从句。一般这种句子称之为嵌套句。这种句子在翻译的时候不要一口气整句全部翻译完，基本上以一个从句为一个逗号，逻辑理顺了整理成一句通顺的话。
• claim：n. 在文中是”索赔要求“的意思。这个词的动词用得多一些，除了“索取、认领”以外，还有 “声称；断言”的意思，举个例子：I don’t claim to be an expert. 我不敢自称为专家。

① A recent case concerns Jane Butlin whose fiancé, John, runs a successful furniture business. ② John had very good day and put his wallet containing ￡3,000 into the microwave oven for safekeeping. ③ Then he and Jane went horse-riding. ④ When they got home, Jane cooked their dinner in the microwave oven and without realizing it, cooked her fiancé’s wallet as well. ⑤ Imagine their dismay when they found a beautifully-cooked wallet and notes turned to ash!

• run：熟词僻意 经营，运营
• put sth into…for safekeeping: 把…放进…保存。safekeeping n. 安全保护，妥善保管
• it 在这里代指 her fiancé’s wallet。
• dismay：n. 沮丧，灰心；惊慌 He looked at her in dismay . 他诧异地看着她。
• when 引导时间状语从句，翻译为“当…时候”。
• turned to ash：化为灰烬。
