OIC! Connecting the IoT World!
Joined by Intel, Dell, Samsung established the Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC) in July 2014, with the intention of implementing the standardization of IoT platforms. Over 50 companies, such as Cisco, GE Software, HP, Lenovo, Siemens, and MediaTek are currently members of the Consortium.
The range of capabilities of the Internet of Things is endless, but there are currently some real defects such as the incompatibility of platforms, and difficulties in cooperation between industries.

OIC is the world’s first and unique organization that pursues openness and compatibility, as well as aiming to create an IoT business standard for interconnecting the vast range of devices from different companies.

The goal is to secure the compatibility of the devices produced by different companies, as well as openness from other companies’ to participate in IoTivity as an Open Source Project.

IoTivity is a representative of the Open Source Project promoted by OIC.
Recently, the IoTivity Open Source Project hosted by the Linux Foundation was publicly announced.
It allows for mutual data exchange between platforms such as Android, Tizen, and iOS, and the goal is to allow a perfect interlock with other companies’ protocols. Meanwhile, an excellent open source environment would also be developed for anyone to use, and pursue development.

With IoTivity, consumers do not have to purchase new devices but enjoy the Internet of Things with the IoT devices they already own.

The function of Group Control may attract those of us who tend to be forgetful. For example, you can control all the dimmable light switches in the house. So, if you
Accidently left the house without turning the lights off, you can amend this by pressing one button on your smartphone.

Samsung, Atmel and MediaTek have clearly shown that it is possible to overcome the difficulties of the Internet of Things by demonstrating the possibility to connect and regulate commercialized products with mutually different hubs.
As of today, IoTivity, version 0.9.0 has been released and anyone can use it freely and participate in the project.

Allseen Alliance

The AllSeen Alliance says Microsoft has joined the group’s multi-company effort as a Premier Member to make it easier for a broad range of everyday devices, objects and services to interoperate seamlessly and intelligently.

With the addition of Microsoft, the AllSeen Alliance now totals 51 members, including heavy hitters in consumer electronics manufacturers, home appliance makers, automotive companies, Internet of Things cloud providers, enterprise technology companies, innovative startups, chipset manufacturers, service providers, retailers and software developers.

AllSeen Alliance members are collaborating on a universal software framework, based on Linux AllJoyn open source code, that allows devices to autonomously discover and interact with nearby products regardless of their underlying proprietary technology or communications protocols. With over 1 billion Windows devices in the market across a variety of verticals, AllJoyn will ultimately expand across these segments, creating a truly horizontal ecosystem for the Internet of Everything.

Microsoft joins Haier, LG, Panasonic, Qualcomm, Sharp, Silicon Image, Technicolor and TP-Link as Premier Members of the Alliance, in addition to 42 Community Members.
