A lofty new book about climbing
Most celebrated mountaineers have been men. But many of the best books about climbing are by women. Honouring some of the classics of climbing literature, “Time on Rock”, a new book by Anna Fleming, is a fine introduction to the genre.
The book tells the story of a young woman’s climbing life, from nervous apprentice to lead climber. It is also a kind of philosophical engagement with rocks. “I think through my hands,” Ms Fleming writes, grappling with the “textures and densities of rock which erode in their own characteristic style”.
Ms Fleming’s book pays tribute to other greats, including Nan Shepherd, a mountaineer and memoirist, and Helen Mort, a poet. Avoiding the narrative of triumph and tragedy, her book joins those which tread a line between nature writing and climbing literature. Ms Fleming goes deep into the mountain landscape—and the minds of those who choose to spend their lives on rock.

娜恩·谢泼德（Nan Shepherd，1893－1981），英国作家、诗人，曾在阿伯丁教育学院教授英国文学。
她是二十世纪早期罕见的女性主义先驱者之一，她生性自由，终生未婚，隐世而居，不好名利，只为自己写作，作品中也流露出对独立和自由的勇敢追求。
作为教师，她曾对学生们说过：女人不一定得坐在炉边织毛衣，大可以放手做点别的事情。正如登山从来都是男人的运动，登山文学从来是男人的文学，但谁说女人就不能登山，不能描写登山呢？
《活山》一书正是她对传统男性登山文学的一次挑战：在书中，她承认自己开始时一心想着登顶，但她渐渐地学会放慢脚步，漫无目的地游走山林，"单纯想要和山待在一起，就像去拜访一位朋友，除了与他做伴，再无其他意图"。
这种不功利的心态让她发现了山的另一面，更是获取了和常人不同的视角，写就了《活山》这本经得起时间考验的经典之作。
《活山》的书稿完成后，曾因"不合时宜"而雪藏三十余年，直到1977年方才出版。3年后，谢泼德搬进疗养院，在病床上仍然会出现处身山林的幻觉，翌年去世。
2016年，苏格兰皇家银行将其肖像印在了英镑上，以纪念和表彰她对苏格兰文学做出的巨大贡献。
