Have you ever felt not good enough for the job that you were hired for? Or that you got to where you are because of sheer luck? Feeling like we aren’t enough is a universal experience that everyone is familiar with. If you find someone who hasn’t felt this way at some point, they’re either about to experience it soon or are lying.

Particularly in the technology industry, imposter syndrome is a term that you’ll hear a lot. For me, as a woman in computer science, I used to constantly doubt my accomplishments and downplay my successes as team victories or attributing it solely to the help that I received … but that’s normal. No one expects you to succeed all on your own.

Imposter syndrome is formally defined as “a false and sometimes crippling belief that one’s successes are the product of luck or fraud rather than skill” (Merriam-Webster). While it’s normal to feel this way, the truth is that imposter syndrome only holds you back from what you are capable of.

The most important step in freeing yourself from imposter syndrome’s grasp is figuring out how you got into it in the first place. Was it internally driven from failing an interview? (More on failure below.) Did a coworker or classmate tell you that you weren’t good enough? Whatever the reason, write it down or have a rough statement in your mind.

I’ll never get a job after I graduate!”

I won’t dig too deep into my story, but hopefully there’s a theme that you see: My doubt is actively preventing me from taking action, and that lack of action then leads into a self-fulfilling prophecy (being jobless).

You can turn your story around, though. It all starts with opening yourself up to opportunity and uplifting yourself.

Imposter syndrome will do everything it can to hold you back and try to keep you underwater. Instead of spiraling into negativity and feeling stuck, start on a positive note.

What amazing things have you done in the past few years? These don’t have to be solely career-focused, either. If they are, great! If not, great! By reflecting on your successes, you can start to realize that you are accomplished and successful. When you look at your list, is there anything that these items have in common? Something that helps is to find your natural strengths and lean on them moving forward.

Before I started creating my own self affirmations, I thought it was pretty cheesy and weird. I mean, who writes notes to themselves about how great and amazing they are? (Hint: You should!)

Self-affirmations are important for two reasons:

Take a few minutes to jot some affirmations down, and repeat them to yourself routinely. Imposter syndrome is a routine feeling that nags at you. To counter that nagging, fill it in instead with love for yourself and your ability.

Failure isn’t as scary as it seems. I repeat — failure is not as scary as it seems. If you think about it, successful people fail all the time. That’s how most people get to where they are. They take a risk, and if it works, it works. If it fails, however, they’ve learned.

That’s the key. Failure leads to learning, not the end of your career or some other disaster that imposter syndrome might’ve convinced you is impending. The faster you fail, the more you’ve learned, and that gives you an edge above other people.

Of course, this comes with assuming you’re actively paying attention to your failures and taking something away from them. Running into a brick wall nine times and then expecting the tenth to magically work … well … won’t. Failing interviews, however, may tell you that maybe that company wasn’t such a great fit. Or the interviewer may have given you actionable feedback that you can work with.

You can reapply again next year; build up your skills in the meantime, and move on with your life.

These are the four main ways that I’ve used to combat my imposter syndrome. That’s not to say I don’t have the occasional doubt or two in my mind, but I’m nowhere near as stressed, worried, or anxious about my ability to succeed and find great opportunities.
