麦可利兰把能力素质划分为五个层次:
1、知识(Knowledge)
2、技能(Skill)
3、自我概念(Self-Concept) :态度、价值观和自我形象等
4、特质(Traits)
5、动机(Motives)
知识和技能属于海平面以上的浅层次的部分
而自我概念、特质、动机属于潜伏在海平面以下的深层次的部分,而研究表明,真正能够把优秀人员与一般人员区分开的是深层次的部分。

specific domains related to self-concept:①Social: the ability to interact with others
②Competence: the ability to meet basic needs
③Affect: the awareness of emotional states
