英语写作中“可能的（不可能的）possible 、likely 、probable ”的表达总结

一、常用单词：possible, likely, probable, impossible, unlikely, potential 。

它们主要的意思区别：possible是一般可能，而probable 和likely 是可能性比较大。

potential 隐含一个演化过程。

二、用法模版：

（1）这些单词都可修饰名词。

例如：a possible/likely/probable/impossible/unlikely/potential chance。

（2）It is （seems）possible/probable/likely/unlikely that……

例如：It is （seems）possible/probable/likely/unlikely that scientists will reveal what the essence of intelligence is in the near future. （有可能（不可能）科学家在不远的将来揭示智能的本质是什么。）

（3）It is possible/impossible to do

例如：According to Misk, it is possible/impossible to achieve space travel next year.（据马斯克说，明年可能（不可能）实现太空旅游。）

三、potential 用法

potential 隐含着一个演化过程，它有时翻译成“潜在的”更合理，例如：a potential solution ，这里用a possible solution 也可以，区别不大。但是，a potential star和a possible star意思就完全不一样，前者指一颗可能演化成恒星的星体，而后者是猜测星体类型。搞清这两个单词的区别对写作很重要。
