英语写作中“省略”、“忽略”、“忽视”omit、ignore、neglect 的用法

一、英语近义词的意思差别经常使人困惑，omit、ignore、neglect就是这样的一组近义词。

二、先从ignore 说起。ignore 含有批评的意味，指责某人忽略（忽视）了什么。例如：

Unfortunately academia originally ignored Galois’ great work on algebra. It’s a terrible tragedy.（不幸的是，学术界最初忽视了伽罗瓦在代数方面了不起的工作，这是一个可怕的悲剧。）

They ignored overhead of computation. In fact, resource constrained devices cannot bear the overhead of computation that stems from their scheme.（他们忽视了计算开销。事实上资源受限设备承受不了他们的方案引起的计算开销。）

The authors ignored the problem that adversaries may compromise the server.（作者忽略了一个问题，就是敌手可能会攻破服务器。）

这一句比较客气的说法是：

The authors failed to consider the problem that adversaries may compromise the server.（作者没有考虑到一个问题……）

所以建议在科技写作中一般用fail to consider 代替ignore，甚至在审稿意见中也避免使用ignore，除非事情确实严重。

此外，ignore的同根名词ignorance 也是攻击性很强的单词，注意它的使用。

二、neglect 批评的意味不明显，例如：

Researchers originally neglected congestion control on the Internet until a deadlock throughout the whole network occurred.（研究者起初忽视拥塞控制，直到一次遍布全网的死锁发生。）

这句只是说明一个事实，并没有批评的意思。

Obviously the authors neglected the possibility of the implosion.（显然作者忽略了内爆的可能性。）

同样的，neglect 可以用fail to consider 代替，也建议写作中这么做。

三、omit是指有意、无意省略掉什么，例如：

The authors omitted the performance evaluation for their protocol. It is inappropriate for a research paper.（作者省略了协议的性能分析，这对于一篇研究论文是不合适的。）

这里不是指作者忽视，而是指他们有意（有所考虑）省略了性能分析。

Considering the limit of page length, we omit comparison with existing work.（考虑到文章篇幅限制，我们省略了与现有研究工作的比较。）

这里omit可以用don’t include ……in……代替：

Considering the limit of page length, we don’t include comparison with existing work in our paper.

（例句均属原创。）
