【Technology020】How to do an academic presentation
Barack
As graduate students, we often need to make an academic presentation during the weekly seminar in the laboratory. The presentation is often an introduction about a paper accepted by a CCF-A or CCF-B conference. Alternatively, It’s about the paper of the speaker himself or herself.
I used to make a presentation according to the sequence of sections in the paper. For example, if the paper has 5 chapters, my presentation has 5 sections. I try to leave out no details of the paper. The main problem is that I fail to sketch out the core contribution of the paper.
So my presentation is scolded by the professor. He thinks that after my 20 minutes presentation, the audience still has no idea about the work I have done. He suggests that I emphasize the meaning and innovation of my work and weaken the technology I use in the paper.
Now, I try to make a presentation according to the following procedures.
- Schedule the point and sequence I want to introduce in the software - Xmind. It should be simple and straight.
- Write down the primary content that I want to introduce in the software - Word. The main points should be emphasized, and some fewer critical points should be simply mentioned or left over.
- Begin to organize the sentences, pictures, and tables in the software - PowerPoint. Fewer words and more pictures. It’d be best if the audience can get your main idea according to your PPT without your speech.
