An alleged coup plot in Kazakhstan
Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, Kazakhstan’s president, will appoint a new prime minister on Tuesday after firing the government during a bout of violent unrest. At least 164 people died in the turmoil, which began with demonstrations over fuel-price rises in the country’s oil-rich west and spread across the country.
After armed clashes erupted in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s biggest city, Mr Toqayev invited troops from Russia and other ex-Soviet states to help restore order. He said hostile forces, which he did not identify, had hijacked the protests to attempt a coup d’état. Almost 8,000 people have been arrested, including Karim Masimov, the former intelligence chief, who faces treason charges. Mr Toqayev also ousted Nursultan Nazarbayev, the 81-year-old former president who has hitherto wielded significant power, from his position as chief of the security council. But it will take more than a government reshuffle for the president to re-impose his authority.

公元1456年建立哈萨克汗国，16世纪时哈萨克族分别发展，成为大中小三个玉兹。19世纪中叶遭俄罗斯帝国吞并。1936年建立哈萨克苏维埃社会主义共和国并加入苏联，成为苏联加盟共和国之一。1991年12月16日独立，哈萨克斯坦共和国成立。
哈萨克斯坦近年来加强了与独联体各国的经济、政治、军事等方面的一体化，2015年1月1日，与俄罗斯、白俄罗斯、吉尔吉斯斯坦等国家成立欧亚经济联盟。

现任哈萨克斯坦国家总统、国家安全委员会主席。
