Spatial audio brings head tracking and a surround-sound effect to the AirPods Pro with iOS 14. We take it for a test drive to find out what it’s all about.

Apple’s public relations team worked overdrive to hype spatial audio at the WWDC 2020 conference, held virtually this past June. Compatible with the AirPods Pro and enabled in iOS 14, spatial audio uses the accelerometers built into the true wireless earphones to create a three-dimensional listening experience-at least that’s the promise.

Sony and various other audio manufacturers have, for years, attempted to recreate spatial or three-dimensional audio experiences using algorithms and effects, and the results have rarely been convincing. In addition, they often do more harm than good to stereo mixes.

Spatial audio isn’t about slapping some surround-sound effect on stereo audio. Rather, the AirPods Pro use accelerometers to track the movement of your head, and the directionality of the audio changes in kind, for a more immersive surround experience.

We’ve seen this sort of feature before on over-ear headphones and gaming headsets like the Dolby Dimension and the HyperX Cloud Orbit S, but in-ear implementation is quite new.

Any fears that this effect would be applied haphazardly to the finely crafted stereo mixes in your music library can be laid to rest-by and large, spatial audio doesn’t work with stereo music content. At least at the outset, the list of what does work with spatial audio is somewhat limited.

You’ll need to make sure your iPhone is up to date before trying out spatial audio for yourself. Check your phone and make sure you’ve got iOS 14 loaded.

Next, you need to make sure your AirPods Pro firmware is up to date-it should be version 3A283. In the iOS Settings menu under General, tap About, then tap on your AirPods to confirm that you have this version (see image below). If not, place the earphones in the charging case, connect the charging case to a power source, and make sure the earphones are still connected to your phone. Assuming you’re on a decent Wi-Fi signal, the update should come through fairly quickly. Within thirty minutes or so, my AirPods Pro had the new firmware.

If you pull up your iOS device’s Control Center screen, you should see the AirPods Pro appear where the volume slider is. Press and hold on this slider, and a screen appears with three controls: one large volume slider, a Noise Cancellation switch (it can be turned on, off, or put in Transparency mode), and Spatial Audio On/Off.

When you enable spatial audio, the icon turns blue, and if the audio you’re listening to works with spatial audio, the icon will be animated. If the audio isn’t supported, the icon will still be blue, but remain still. If you disable spatial audio completely, the icon’s background goes from blue to black. It’s worth noting that, in testing, the spatial audio feature was set to On by default.

If you want a deeper dive, go to the Bluetooth menu, tap on the “i” icon next to your paired AirPods Pro, and a screen with various controls and bits of information about your earphones will appear. Scroll down, and you’ll see not only the Spatial Audio On/Off slider, but a See & Hear How It Works link, which brings up the screen in the image below.

The demo starts with a chime-and-shaker-driven percussive audio loop in stereo; you’re then invited to press Spatial Audio to experience the loop with the effect on.

My first impression, based on this demo, is that the audio simply sounds like it’s going through a different type of reverb and EQ filter. But with a little head movement, you notice the effect. Turn your head to the right, and the shaker is in your left ear; turn to the left, and it ends up back in your right ear.

When the shaker is directly in front of you, it almost sounds like what you’d hear if you had the exact same music blasting through speakers and playing at a moderate volume through headphones in the same room at the same time (yes, I’ve done this many times because it sounds cool). In this scenario, you hear some of the room sound along with the direct audio of the headphone signal, and it can create an immersive feeling.

I went with a Denis Villeneuve movie, Blade Runner 2049 (downloaded from iTunes), to try spatial audio, and the effect is evident immediately. This isn’t a basic algorithm at work; it recognizes where you are in relation to your phone. Turn your head, and the ear closer to your phone will hear more audio. Dialogue may seem to move more dramatically than background noises, but everything shifts to a degree. It’s cool for a few minutes, but hearing film audio this way gets old eventually-the stereo mix without this effect applied is more engaging.

Black Panther, streamed via Disney+, sounds a little more transformed, but not necessarily for the better. In quiet dialogue scenes, the audio sounds wildly different when listening in default stereo mode versus spatial audio. Yes, turning your head changes the sonic placement of the dialogue, but the dialogue itself then seems coated in a bizarre reverb and EQ that doesn’t make it easier to hear or enhance the viewing experience. Action scenes with more foley effects fare better, but sometimes expose the limits of feature.

For instance, consider a slap-back delay when a character yells outside-if you turn your head, the voice moves from one ear to the other, but the slap-back does too. In a real-life setting, the delay would be happening around you, and so moving your head would shift the origin sound (the voice) from one ear or another, but the slap-back delay (ostensibly the voice echoing off nearby walls and surfaces) would remain in both ears. Sure, one ear would get more than another, or maybe you’d hear more of one particular echo than another in one ear depending on how you turn your head, but the delay wouldn’t be traceable to a single location like the original voice is-and that’s what happens here.

That said, the effect itself is impressive, and the possibilities for games and apps are exciting. And if you don’t like it, you can disable it.

For now, spatial audio is a cool effect that adds an interesting, if somewhat gimmicky, layer to movies, TV, and other videos, as long as they support the feature. We got it to work with content from iTunes, Apple TV+, HBO Max, and Disney+, but it didn’t work with Amazon Prime Video or Netflix.

In other words, out of the gate, spatial audio is relatively limited, but the possibilities are intriguing. Think of audio that can be mixed with this effect in mind from the start, so that actions like turning around open up elements of the mix you couldn’t hear as well when turned the other way. It can be really cool-all it requires is participation from filmmakers, game developers, and other content creators.

It’s easy to see why filmmakers might hesitate to use this as an embedded effect, as it can distract from the storyline. But games and apps, where the user is driving the narrative, seem ideal for this immersive technology, and it’s where we’ve seen it work in headsets like the HyperX Cloud Orbit S.

At this stage, spatial audio is more of a cool effect than a game changer, but who knows what the future holds? And it makes the AirPods Pro-already a PCMag Editors’ Choice-an even better buy.
