An expert advisory panel for America’s Food and Drug Administration meets on Tuesday to discuss Pfizer/BioNTech’s application for authorisation to give its two-dose covid-19 vaccine to children between the ages of 5 and 11. A report from the FDA last week said the vaccine’s efficacy rate in young children was 90.7% against symptomatic infection seven days after they got the second dose.

Children are less likely than adults to die of the virus, but infection can still cause long-term illness. Advisers to America’s Centres for Disease Control and Prevention will share their thoughts on the application in the first week of November, then the agency’s director will decide whether or not to actually recommend use of the vaccine. Anthony Fauci, chief medical adviser to President Joe Biden, has said that if regulatory approval is granted, vaccines could become available for younger children early next month.
