Why doing the thing is ALWAYS harder than you think - YouTube[1]

James Lim|

第一步,相信自己;

第二步,只管去做;

1 Why is taking action so hard? We often say, "I know what to do, why can't I do it?" The issue is that most people are looking in the wrong place. Your focus on what you need to fix is misplaced. You end up building the wrong approach and doubling down on things that won't work for you. I see this time and time again. Most people focus on what needs to be done. For example, you keep reading the same types of books about strategies like making more sales calls or putting yourself out there. It's almost a joke: step one, believe in yourself; step two, just do it; and step three, success. But reality is different. You have to face this bridge, find a way across it, and deal with the mental state right at the point where you need to take the leap. Fear, uncertainty, self-doubt, lack of confidence, impostor syndrome, overwhelm, anxiety—these are all the things we think about. Your plans often don't consider the emotions you'll face at this point and the specific path you need to take, depending on how those emotions affect you. You try to start but feel unsure. The plan steps seem ineffective, and you end up standing at the edge of the bridge, overwhelmed. These are symptoms of an unaddressed problem, often an emotional one. You're not solving it because you're reading more books about steps to take rather than how to deal with the fear of stepping onto the rope bridge.

2 We need to shift from a logic-based system to an emotional one. If you continue as you are, you increase feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt, frustration, and often end up feeling stupid. This causes chronic avoidance, procrastination, and instant gratification. You end up training these habits into your system. Long-term effects include constant self-doubt, anxiety about taking action, increased sensitivity to overwhelm, severe procrastination habits, and a feeling of being incapable. You feel like you've let yourself down again. This can lead to an addiction to acquiring more knowledge and seeking distractions. You start adopting an "excuse identity." Do you want to be known for constantly making excuses? The deterioration of your ability to take any action is a reality for many. When I start with people, it's sometimes so difficult to take even the smallest actions, leading to a downward spiral.

3 Here's a diagram of it: You have ideas, start researching, try to start, create an insufficient action plan, feel overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, criticize yourself, avoid the task, go back to research, and this cycle leads to no action. We need to get you over this side. Many people never make it across. For the important projects in their life, they often make it there. You get increased sensitivity to overwhelm, self-doubt, anxiety, stress, procrastination, and a noticeable drop in confidence, mental fitness, and the ability to figure things out—an important skill—and the ability to start.

4 What's the solution? We need to give you purpose and motivation to help rev you up, so you're ready to tackle the rope bridge. Adopting an effective mindset is crucial. Start changing your thinking and beliefs. Create a practical and accessible action plan, something manageable—not running across the bridge all the way the first time. Make the process as easy as possible. The safer and more accessible we make it, the less resistance your brain puts up. Have a system to help you stick to the plan so you don't stray off. This will arm you for life. I've continued to use this approach for over 10 years, and my clients find it incredibly useful in any situation. This will allow you to go wherever you want. If you learn to tackle this bit, you can jump from island to island forever. Often, people say, "I never thought I'd be here." That's one of the greatest things I like to hear. Working on crossing this one bridge has enabled them to cross to wherever they want to go.
