Hi, I’m Ross Knepper, a professor at Cornell University. i’m using baxter to teach robotic manipulation. the course is split between theory and practice with all of the practical assignments being implemented on a Baxter robot using ros(the robot operating system). Students in the course appreciate the authentic robotics access that Baxter provides.
Nick,Mechanical engieering major:the most exciting thing is really does any time we get Baxter to move and he’s doing something meaningful and close to what we want it to do.
Issac,Computer science major:I wrote like pretty simple recursive algorithm that that then just orders all Baxter’s events and being able to tie that into like the physical motion. I think like the idea of like a recursive robot algorithm was really exciting.
the projects are designed to be very open-ended,allowing students to explore and be creative while solving real robotics and how many problems such as pick in place draw on a whiteboard object recognition and collision avoidance. the capabilities developed during the projects culminate in a competition at the end of the semester. in the game, each team controls one arm of Baxter in a soccer tournament.they set up blocks on their field as defenders and they use the robots arm for both goalkeeping and occers. each team develops its own strategy involving custom software and optionally hardware. students learn many skills that they will use in their future careers.
Daryl,Computer science major:I plan to work. and some robotics wouldn’t feel ideal in the future. so I think having like a formal exposure to different techniques, actually working through a lot of the problems we did, a problem sets as well as applying stuff Baxter. it’s like super valuable
I didn’t really have a background in robotics, this is giving me like a huge Bread and also like really let me specialized programming working with this really cool robot, which I wouldn’t normally get a chance to do
