in this course u will learn how to create your first substance material using a practical, real world example. u do not need any previous experience with substance designer.

the course is divided into four chapters:
ch1: discusses workflow, substance painter and node architecture
ch2: creating the height data
ch3: creating maps such as roughness, base color
ch4: material layering, exporting textures and publishing sbsar files

in simple terms substance designer is an application used to create textures it uses a node-based interface where u work in a graph connecting nodes.

in this video we are gonna talk about what a node is i am not getting into creating graphs or substances just yet
u know well what a node is so here i have a substance designer and this is what we refer to as a package so it is the substance and within this i have an item

can export to apply to materials in 3d apps and game engines
u can also publish a substance material which can then be loaded into an application using a substance plugin
the plug-in will create a material in the host application with the substance textures hooked into the material channesl

the materials can then be simply applied in the scene
here is another example

substance designer is a rich and capable texturing tools its primary use is to create base materials

right now we are just going to talk about u know welll what a node is
so here i have a substance designer and this is what we refer to as a package

node editor
the node which is how u are going to produce the textures that u create so this node editor or workspace is actually a graph that houses several nodes

the librarian substance designer is where u can see a collection of all the nodes that ship with the program so in this case i have the generators category noises

2D view

what we refer to as instancing the node into a graph so again what i have done here is i have taken the black and white spots and

the parent graph and this node is a child of this parent graph another thing that is interesting about these nodes is well the nodes are just graphs themselves
so for example if i right click this node u can see that i have this option here to open a reference

in explorer view a new substance package has been opened and u can see that is a dot sbs this the substance designer source file and

atomic or operational nodes
these are what we refer to as atomic or operational nodes
atomic nodes are the DNA

i want to take a moment to discuss the type of workflow we will be using throughout this course

in this video we are going to create our first node here in our graph which is going to be the base material node so we can create a node different ways here in designer
so the first option would be if i just hit the spacebar and that is going to open up this window here

that allows me to select one of these nodes here now these are the nodes that we refer to as the operational or the atomic nodes and we talked about this briefly in chapter one here u can see that i have a search field and i can start to search for a specific node which will then filter this window so for example if i want to start to type in the word base i filtered my search query and i can see here that we have a base material node this is what i want to use so in order to create this node i am just going to perform a single left click and that node is now created here in my graph now if i come over to this node and i just do a double click what that is going to do here in my 2d view is view the contents of the first output of this node

u will also notice that with this node selected we have these two icons here we call these the badge 徽章 icons and they indicate what is being viewed in our 2d view and the properties panel

so for example on this node u can see that the first badge looks this page that’s talking about the parameters what this means is that the parameters are displayed in the properties panel now if we come over here u can see that we have some options for base parameters attributes and then we have this instance parameters so we have this word instance now

the terminology that we use here in designer when u create a node as we say that we have created an instance of that node here in our graph workspace hence here in the properties

i could hit the tab key which actually opens the exact same window so we have two options here we have the tab key or the spacebar whichever keyboard shortcut u could prefer another way to create the nodes would be to just come over here to the library and if u know the category the node is located u could just browse for it there so for example if i come over to material filters and i come over to pbr utilies

i can also use the search to query for a results start to type in base u can see just as before the library then filters and here we have the base material now i can just left-click and drag and drop this here into the graph again we refer to this as creating an instance of this node in our graph so i will double click again to make sure that the first output of this base material node is being viewed here in my 2d view now

let us change some of these options so for the material preset 预设
i am gonna switch this from custom to dielectric so this means that we are going to be creating a non-metal for the base color value again like

for the roughness value i am gonna set this up here to u know closer to full white or extremely rough and since this a dielectric we do not have any settings here for our metallic so we have talked about being able to view these outputs again if i double click here this base color

3D下显示,用右键,然后直接拖拽到3D视图
2D显示,直接双击鼠标左键即可
